Dr. Stephen Pollack is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Anchor Loans, LP (“Anchor”), the nation’s largest lender to the fix-and-flip industry.
Dr. Pollack, along with fellow real estate entrepreneurs Jeffrey Lipton and Daniel Harrington, co-founded Anchor Loans in 1998 to provide private capital to fix-and-flip investors in Southern California. Under their leadership, Anchor has grown from a home-based startup into a leading private mortgage lender operating in 38 U.S. states (and counting) with over $4.5 billion in loans funded to date. In 2016, Anchor surpassed $1.1 billion in loans funded in a single year, making the Calabasas, California based company the nation’s largest private lender to the fix-and-flip market.
From the company’s inception, Pollack’s goal has been to bring highly qualified borrowers and trust deed investors together to create long-term relationships and mutually beneficial opportunities for all parties. With a focus on integrity, reliability and unsurpassed customer service, Pollack led Anchor teams to pioneer advanced technologies that have streamlined the company’s application, approval, funding and loan servicing processes. Over 85% of Anchor’s customers are repeat borrowers who appreciate the speed, efficiency, expertise, flexibility and customer service that come with Anchor financing.
Given Anchor’s rapid expansion, consistent profitability and infinitesimal foreclosure rate (0.21% on 10,000+ loans since 2010), Dr. Pollack is a sought-after expert and industry thought leader, addressing conferences and organizations on a variety of topics related to real estate investing and mortgage financing.
As CEO, Dr. Pollack brings over 30 years of real estate experience and an exceptional understanding of the cyclical nature of real estate investing, which inform both the company’s expansion goals and its risk-mitigating strategies. Indeed, Anchor has shown exceptional performance for its entire history—including the real estate downturn of 2008-9 when many lenders suffered devastating losses. While many of Anchor’s competitors maintained high loan production levels, Pollack anticipated the downturn in 2006, and Anchor strategically scaled back lending, returning a significant amount of capital to its investors.
Prior to the founding of Anchor Loans, Pollack ran a successful optometry practice in Stockton, California, where he served as President of the San Joaquin Optometric Association. As an Associate Clinical Professor at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry, Dr. Pollack was one of the youngest faculty members in the history of the school. Even while he ran his practice, Steve had a passion for real estate, developing a portfolio of his own fix-and-flip properties and gaining in-depth knowledge of the industry he would eventually serve.
A native of New York, Pollack received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychobiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Doctorate in Optometry from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Pollack is a member of Anchor’s Board of Directors, is a licensed real estate and mortgage broker, and sits on the board of the California Mortgage Association where he is the Immediate Past President.
